What is Public Health?
Public health is all around us, yet most of the time we don’t even notice it.
From the water we drink to the vaccines we receive, from the safety of the food we eat to the way our cities are designed, public health quietly shapes our everyday lives. It works in the background, often invisible, but constantly protecting and improving the wellbeing of communities.
At its core, public health is about keeping people healthy and preventing disease, not just at an individual level, but across entire populations. What makes it different is that it focuses on prevention rather than just treatment. Instead of asking how to treat illness, it asks why it happens in the first place.
Why are some communities more affected than others? How do factors like income, education, environment, and access to care shape health outcomes? And what can be done to create more equitable systems?
Another key part of public health today is communication. We live in a world where information spreads quickly, but so does misinformation. Being able to translate complex health information into something clear, relatable, and trustworthy is more important than ever.
As public health students, we are not only learning about these broader issues, but also how to communicate them in a way that actually connects with people.
That’s where Public Health Unplugged comes in.
Public Health Unplugged is a space where we take complex public health topics and break them down into content that is accessible, engaging, and grounded in evidence. Through our journal and podcast, we aim to make public health conversations more relatable, while also amplifying student voices.
Public health is not just something that exists in textbooks or policies. It is something that shapes all of our lives, often in ways we don’t even realise.
And the more we understand it, the better equipped we are to improve it.
